Dynamic shipping environments require less-than-truckload (LTL) shipping contracts that balance cost and service. These are the most affordable ways to optimize LTL shipping contracts, leveraging expert insights.

Embrace Consolidation Opportunities

Companies can combine multiple LTL shipments into a larger, single load. This allows shippers to handle more intensive projects while making rates more affordable. Some businesses outsource this process to logistics partners, such as Broussard Logistics, that specialize in LTL optimization and freight oversight.

In these cases, a partner brings visibility across shipment patterns, carrier performance and billing data. This information makes it easy to spot consolidation opportunities. This approach allows companies to focus their resources on other parts of their supply chain, while the partner provides greater oversight and freight bill auditing to find savings.

For example, Broussard Logistics applies its own method to optimize LTL contracts. Its transportation management system (TMS) and managed transportation team identify consolidation windows by analyzing lane density, service windows and accessorial patterns across your shipments. It’s not just weekly it is continuous. It often finds actionable opportunities when average pallets per shipment are low, dwell times are high or accessorial fees cluster by lane.

Leverage a Cloud-Based TMS for LTL Optimization

Other organizations use platforms like TMSs to identify the best financial options. TMSs are powerful tools that consolidate tasks into a singular dashboard, with load management, real-time tracking and carrier selection, among other essential duties, in one space. Broussard Logistics offers a comprehensive solution for this alongside conventional advising and expertise.

A robust TMS enables remote collaboration and data-driven insights, with capabilities like analyzing audit transportation costs and expanding cybersecurity redundancies for business-critical information. Improved communication helps coordinate inbound and outbound shipments and reduces delays caused by miscommunications and inefficiencies. TMSs can also save money by serving as hubs for identifying the lowest-cost carrier and improving routing compliance.

The value of these strategies extends beyond immediate cost savings. LTL shipments can be co-mingled with goods from other companies and sent to multiple destinations, so TMSs are essential to maintain transparency and visibility throughout the process. They can save money by preventing unnecessary mishaps, accidental redirections and delays.

As a result, more companies are making freight consolidation a key focus of their business strategy to enhance their standing in global trade, with TMSs making insights more accessible. The program also saves money on LTL shipping contracts by pulling and analyzing data to inspire more informed negotiations based on historical freight characteristics. Ultimately, these metrics culminate in a more resilient and customer-focused logistics operation, strengthening a company’s market position.

Dive Deeper Into LTL Contract Management Data Analytics

Data can help LTL teams save by consolidating based on previously unoptimized contracts, but data in TMSs and other sources can reveal countless other opportunities to preserve budgets through stronger terms.

Strategic LTL contract management is a comprehensive strategy that uses data to create more dynamic contracts. Software pulls crucial data points, including true shipping costs, volumes, damage rates and more, to curate a deal that is reflective of the organization’s trends and key performance indicators (KPIs). Analytics enable companies to continuously refine contracts based on the most successful terms while remaining open to further optimizations, solidifying long-term partnerships that continue to maximize value and eliminate pain points.

As resources, like TMSs, learn more about the most lucrative contracts, teams can use the data to forecast savings before the next negotiations begin. The insights help teams understand how well the terms could be received, having already considered the contract’s value based on market trends and internal KPIs.

Make a Deal for Lower Fuel Surcharges

Fortunately, there are numerous other ways to negotiate lower LTL contracts. Fuel surcharges plague organizations, especially when the prices are volatile and based on availability. Fortunately, LTL organizations can negotiate surcharge tables as part of the contract to identify additional savings.

For domestic LTL, FSCs are typically tied to the weekly DOE on-highway diesel indexes. These tables are often updated on Wednesdays and are based on the previous Monday’s data. It’s important to verify pricing tables with your local LTL shipping company in case they use region-specific rates. All-in rates are also available for businesses that want contracts to prioritize predictability and simplified invoicing.

Shipping organizations can use their staff to negotiate terms for a cap or hire a third party to implement a more favorable pricing system for LTL contracts, such as a tiered pricing structure. This approach prevents businesses from being susceptible to sudden price increases. It is crucial to know the surcharge curve, so teams can determine if they need to focus on tier-based percentage increases or higher price points at the beginning.

Conduct Regular Freight Invoice Audits

Freight auditing becomes more challenging with LTL contracts, as many companies lose profits due to miscalculated invoices for conventional shipments. Implementing thorough auditing and automation can reduce total freight spend by up to 8%, yielding over $1 million in savings after processing 10,000 shipments. Audits deliver several advantages that produce smarter financial decision-making.

First, freight invoice audits are valuable assets when preparing for upcoming contract negotiations. Identifying consistent errors can prevent refund requests in the future. Manual auditing is effective, but the process becomes even more precise when combined with software. It can automatically observe shipments, contracts and shipping times to catch frequent errors, like:

Duplicate bills

Improperly assigned weights and dimensions

Misappropriated delivery or liftgate fees

Missing discounts

Wrong freight classification

Teams work tirelessly to negotiate lucrative and fair terms, and auditing adds a security blanket to upcoming contracts. Regular reviews make sure every word is applied and that all rate caps, waived fees and other terms are compliant for every job and client. Without auditing, companies cannot confirm if their optimization techniques are producing the savings they expect.

Left unchecked, these seemingly minor discrepancies can accumulate into substantial financial losses, directly impacting a company’s bottom line. Rather than monthly or quarterly ‘audit cycles,’ continuous auditing prevents disputes from falling outside the allowable window.

The Most Affordable Ways to Optimize LTL Shipping Contracts

Ironclad contracts are the backbone of long-term partnerships in the shipping industry. Wasting resources by constantly seeking new, short-term contracts may cost more than any savings a fresh contract could yield. Developing relationships that stand the test of time will make partners more willing to offer better rates, negotiate with their most loyal customers and provide reliable service quality.

Optimizing space, leveraging technology and outsourcing negotiations to third parties are only some of the ways to solidify a competitive position in the freight management industry. Working with logistics experts like Broussard Logistics gives businesses access to the same proven strategies that industry leaders use to create a resilient and efficient foundation for their operations. Utilizing these resources enables businesses to withstand market volatility, reach as many customers as possible and achieve high returns.

The post How to Save Money by Optimizing LTL Shipping Contracts first appeared on Packaging World Insights.

The Future of Paper Packaging in a Circular Economy

The packaging industry stands at a transformative crossroads where traditional linear models of “take-make-dispose” are giving way to regenerative circular systems that prioritize resource conservation and waste elimination. At the heart of this revolution lies paper packaging, a material uniquely positioned to drive the transition toward sustainable commerce through its inherent recyclability, biodegradability, and renewable sourcing capabilities.

Redefining Packaging Through Circular Principles

The circular economy paper packaging revolution represents more than just material substitution—it embodies a fundamental shift in how we conceptualize product protection, brand communication, and environmental stewardship. Unlike traditional packaging systems that end at disposal, circular economy paper packaging is designed from inception to remain in productive use through multiple lifecycles, whether through reuse, recycling, or controlled biodegradation.

Circular flow diagram of paper packaging lifecycle

This approach aligns with the three core principles of circular design: eliminating waste and pollution, circulating products and materials at their highest value, and regenerating natural systems. Paper packaging excels across all these dimensions, offering manufacturers and consumers a pathway to reduce environmental impact while maintaining functionality and aesthetic appeal.

The Science Behind Sustainable Paper Solutions

Modern paper packaging leverages advanced manufacturing processes that maximize resource efficiency while enhancing performance characteristics. The kraft process, originally developed in the 1880s, has evolved to incorporate sustainable forestry practices, closed-loop water systems, and energy recovery technologies that minimize environmental footprint.

Contemporary paper mills increasingly utilize recycled fiber content, with some facilities achieving recycling rates exceeding 87 percent for paper-based packaging materials. This remarkable circularity coefficient demonstrates paper’s superior performance compared to alternative materials, particularly plastic packaging which achieves only 42 percent recycling rates across European markets.

Advanced coating technologies and barrier solutions now enable paper packaging to compete effectively with traditional plastic alternatives across moisture-sensitive applications. Water-resistant coatings derived from renewable sources provide protection without compromising recyclability, while innovative structural designs enhance strength and durability through engineering rather than additional material usage.

Market Dynamics Driving Circular Adoption

The global transition toward circular economy paper packaging is accelerating under multiple market pressures. Regulatory frameworks, including the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation and similar legislation across major markets, are establishing mandatory recyclability targets and single-use plastic restrictions that favor paper-based solutions.

Consumer preferences increasingly influence purchasing decisions, with surveys indicating that 62 percent of European consumers prefer products delivered in paper packaging for online purchases. This demand translates directly into competitive advantage for brands adopting sustainable packaging strategies, with over half of consumers actively seeking retailers committed to plastic-free packaging alternatives.

Comparison chart linear vs circular packaging

Economic incentives further reinforce circular adoption patterns. Paper packaging systems offer cost advantages through reduced raw material requirements, simplified recycling infrastructure compatibility, and decreased waste management expenses. These financial benefits become particularly pronounced as carbon pricing mechanisms and extended producer responsibility regulations expand globally.

Innovation Ecosystems and Technological Advancement

The circular economy paper packaging sector benefits from robust innovation ecosystems that continuously expand application possibilities and performance boundaries. Research institutions collaborate with industry partners to develop next-generation materials that combine functionality with environmental responsibility.

Molded fiber technology represents one significant advancement, enabling the creation of complex three-dimensional forms from recycled paper pulp. These applications replace polystyrene and other problematic materials in electronics packaging, food service containers, and protective packaging systems while maintaining full compostability.

Nanotechnology applications enhance barrier properties through microscopic coatings that provide moisture and oxygen protection without compromising recyclability. These innovations expand paper packaging applications into previously plastic-dominated sectors including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and specialty foods.

Digital integration creates opportunities for smart circular economy paper packaging systems that optimize material usage through data-driven design and supply chain integration. Internet-of-Things sensors embedded in packaging provide real-time performance feedback that informs continuous improvement cycles and predictive maintenance schedules.

Supply Chain Transformation and Infrastructure Development

Successful circular economy paper packaging implementation requires coordinated supply chain transformation that aligns material flows with circular principles. This involves developing reverse logistics systems for packaging collection, establishing regional processing facilities for material recovery, and creating quality standards that ensure recycled content meets performance requirements.

Infrastructure investments in recycling technology and capacity expansion support increasing circular material flows. Advanced sorting systems utilizing artificial intelligence and optical recognition improve fiber recovery rates while reducing contamination levels that compromise recycled material quality.

Partnerships between packaging manufacturers, brand owners, retailers, and waste management companies create integrated systems where packaging materials flow seamlessly through multiple use cycles. These collaborations establish consistent quality standards, optimize transportation efficiency, and share costs across value chain participants.

Consumer Engagement and Behavioral Integration

The success of circular economy paper packaging depends significantly on consumer understanding and participation in circular systems. Education initiatives that communicate proper disposal methods, recycling protocols, and reuse opportunities maximize material recovery rates and system effectiveness.

Packaging design plays a crucial role in facilitating consumer engagement through clear labeling, intuitive functionality, and attractive aesthetics that encourage proper handling. Minimalist designs reduce material usage while sophisticated printing techniques maintain brand differentiation and shelf appeal.

Convenience factors influence consumer behavior substantially, requiring circular systems to match or exceed the ease of traditional linear packaging approaches. Innovations in packaging design prioritize user experience through features like easy-open mechanisms, resealable closures, and compact storage configurations.

Economic Models and Value Creation

Circular economy paper packaging creates value through multiple revenue streams and cost optimization opportunities. Traditional packaging represents a cost center for most companies, but circular approaches transform packaging into a value-generating asset through material recovery, brand differentiation, and customer engagement benefits.

Subscription and refill business models leverage durable paper packaging systems to reduce per-use packaging costs while enhancing customer lifetime value. These approaches particularly benefit direct-to-consumer brands seeking to build recurring revenue streams while demonstrating environmental commitment.

Industrial symbiosis opportunities enable paper packaging manufacturers to utilize waste streams from other industries as input materials, reducing raw material costs while providing waste management solutions for partner organizations. These collaborative approaches strengthen regional economic networks while advancing circular principles.

Regional Market Leadership and Global Expansion

Different global regions demonstrate varying levels of circular economy paper packaging adoption based on regulatory environments, consumer preferences, and infrastructure capabilities. Europe leads in regulatory framework development and consumer acceptance, while Asia-Pacific regions show rapid growth in manufacturing capacity and innovation investment.

North American markets benefit from established recycling infrastructure and strong consumer environmental awareness, creating favorable conditions for circular economy paper packaging expansion. Latin American regions present significant growth opportunities as environmental consciousness increases and regulatory frameworks develop.

Market leaders recognize that early investment in circular economy paper packaging capabilities creates competitive advantages that become more pronounced as regulations tighten and consumer preferences evolve. Companies establishing circular systems now position themselves favorably for long-term market leadership.

Future Outlook and Strategic Implications

The trajectory toward widespread circular economy paper packaging adoption appears irreversible as regulatory, economic, and social pressures align in favor of sustainable solutions. Organizations that proactively develop circular capabilities will capture increasing market share while those maintaining linear approaches face growing disadvantages.

Technology advancement continues accelerating, promising further improvements in paper packaging performance, cost-effectiveness, and application range. Investment in research and development, infrastructure, and partnership development provides the foundation for successful circular economy participation.

The integration of digital technologies, advanced materials science, and systems thinking creates unprecedented opportunities for innovation in circular economy paper packaging. Organizations that embrace these possibilities while maintaining focus on core circular principles will drive the next phase of sustainable packaging evolution.

The future of paper packaging in a circular economy represents both challenge and opportunity for businesses committed to environmental stewardship and long-term value creation.

Do you know that the low-density polyethylene – LDPE resins market across the world is witnessing prominent growth due to flexible packaging, films, and sheets?

There is a report rolled out by Persistence Market Research, which states that the CAGR pertaining to the LDPE resins market is all set to see a growth of 4.6%, thereby increasing the market value from almost $40.25 billion in 2024 to an anticipated $55.15 billion by 2031.

All thanks to LDPE’s application across numerous sectors such as consumer goods, industrial uses, and even food packaging, this growth is inevitable.

What are the key drivers of this segment?

One thing we can think of is the rising environmental concerns and shift towards more sustainable packaging solutions. In addition to these advancements in production technologies, this can also be one of the reasons why this market is witnessing an expansion like this.

One cannot deny the fact that LDPE is durable and lightweight, and its non-toxic properties make it the material of choice when it comes to numerous manufacturers.

There are also innovations that are taking place when it comes to packaging solutions, like multi-layered films that are driving more LDPE resin usage, especially when we talk of agriculture and food packaging.

Who is leading the segment of the LDPE resin market?

The films and sheets application are indeed making its way to the pole position when we talk of the LDPE resins market segment. Geographically, this market is led by North America because of a strong industrial infrastructure, rising demand for sustainable packaging solutions, and, of course, advancements in technology.

How about the market segmentation?

The LDPE resins market can be based on

Product Type

Application

Regional trends

In terms of technology, the market is essentially divided into autoclave and tubular, where the former remains popular when it comes to producing high-quality resins that have uniform thickness, whereas the latter are more efficient in terms of large-scale production and higher-volume applications.

There is one more key segment, which is based on application, which includes films and sheets, injection molding, and extrusion coating.

There is a wide use of films and sheets in agriculture, packaging, and medical products, whereas the extrusion coating segment is growing at a steady pace driven by rising demand for protective coating across various sectors such as construction and automotive. When it comes to injection molding applications, they are gaining ground in the production of consumer goods along with industrial components.

Regional perspectives

North America, the global LDPE resins market, due to a robust industrial infrastructure and, of course, rising consumer awareness pertaining to sustainable packaging solutions. Asia, especially China and Japan, is witnessing very fast growth in the LDPE resins market. The former, for that matter, is the world’s largest consumer of plastics and hence is a major contributor to the LDPE resins demand.

The key market drivers

The rising demand when it comes to flexible packaging is a very crucial driver. It is well to be noted that LDPE resins are perfect for lightweight, flexible, and durable packaging materials, especially when it comes to the food and beverage industry. As one can increasingly witness a boom in the e-commerce segment across the world, the need for cost-effective, efficient, and sustainable packaging solutions is also growing. The rising bent towards sustainability is also throttling the LDPE resins market. As there are more environmental concerns, companies are reeling under a lot of pressure to adopt sustainable packaging options.

Market barriers

In spite of the unprecedented growth prospects, there are certain barriers too that the LDPE resins market is facing. To start with, there are the raw materials. Prices have been fluctuating pretty often, and they can actually affect the production cost. Moreover, crude oil as well as natural gas, which are key raw materials when it comes to LDPE production, are often subject to volatile pricing, which can also cause a disruption in the supply chain and hence raise the manufacturing cost.

Also, while LDPE happens to be recyclable, the improper disposal of plastic waste goes on to pose an environmental hazard, thereby leading to strict norms and rising pressure on manufacturers to keep themselves abreast with eco-friendly production methodology. This is indeed a challenge and also an opportunity for innovation.

What are the opportunities?

Expansion of the biodegradable and sustainable packaging sector. This is indeed a major opportunity for growth in the LDPE market. As consumers push for greener alternatives, demand for environmentally friendly packaging is witnessing an unprecedented rise, and LTPE products are expected to gain from it. There are also new market avenues for LDPE resins, such as advancements in recycling technology and also the development of biodegradable resins.

The post Packaging Sector Now Also Driven by LDPE Resins Market first appeared on Packaging World Insights.

Bormioli Pharma, a leading international manufacturer of pharmaceutical packaging and medical devices, today announced a significant increase of 47% in its North American sales for 2023. This notable growth is a direct result of the company’s rapidly evolving infrastructure and expanded capacity, tailored to meet the unique demands of the North American pharmaceutical market, including an increased need for pharmaceutical glass vials.

Bormioli Pharma strengthened its strategic focus on the US market four years ago by establishing a new legal entity and a commercial branch in the US. From then on, the company’s on-site commercial team has been expanded, an FDA-approved warehouse established, and dedicated product offerings compatible with regional standards have been designed. For North American customers, this translates into the availability of a reliable and flexible packaging partner that can streamline their purchasing processes while reducing supply chain complexity, shortening their time-to-market and supporting them in the development of high-value projects with local, qualified support.

The pharmaceutical glass vials market is projected to grow from $12.1 billion in 2023 to $24.1 billion by 2033, expanding at a 7.10% CAGR, driven by rising pharmaceutical product demands.1 The US market is one of the major growth contributors (with an expected CAGR of 8.0% in North America for 2023-20282) and there is a high demand for suppliers capable of providing turn-key packaging solutions that meet regional standards, such as the use of glass Type I expansion 33. Bormioli Pharma recently signed a key contract with a US-based global leader in allergen immunotherapy for the supply of ready-to-use, vertically integrated packaging kits for two of its major manufacturing sites in the US. The full packaging kits include aluminum seals, rubber stoppers, Type I molded glass vials, and Type I tubular glass expansion 33 vials.

“As we grow our presence in North America and expand our capabilities to meet regional standards, we are committed to the partnerships that enable us to broaden our reach,” said Johann Depperschmidt, Bormioli Pharma’s Head of Sales, Americas. “To best serve our North American customers, we’ve adapted our manufacturing processes to produce Type I Glass expansion 33 vials in our European facilities, ensuring robust production and backup. We have an on-site, dedicated US sales team and a local warehouse, and we look forward to expanding these resources further in 2024. Additionally, we are collaborating with a US-based sterilization company to prepare ready-to-use packaging kits – a partnership we believe is a significant step forward in ensuring that quality healthcare becomes a more accessible reality for people everywhere.”

Bormioli Pharma’s Chief Executive Officer, Andrea Lodetti noted, “Our momentous growth in the North American market embodies our dedication to meeting and exceeding the evolving needs of this dynamic market. We are not just expanding our footprint but also enhancing our efficiency and adaptability. This growth aligns perfectly with our mission to provide innovative and sustainable pharmaceutical packaging solutions, and we are proud to say that our growth is not only robust but also responsible.”

Bormioli Pharma has committed to several initiatives that place the company at the forefront of sustainable pharma packaging. The company has embarked on a strong ESG path and is working to publish its third ESG Report later this year. Bormioli Pharma made notable progress in its “50-in-5” program that aims to achieve 50% of sustainable raw materials in its pharmaceutical packaging products by 2025. In 2023, the company successfully increased its use of sustainable raw materials to 45%, up from 39% in the previous year. Additionally, it conducted comprehensive analyses on its sustainable pharma packaging, reaffirming the uncompromised safety and reliability of its products. Furthermore, Bormioli Pharma recently partnered with leading Canadian clean technology company, Loop Industries, to use 100% recycled virgin-quality Loop™ PET resin for developing a novel pharmaceutical packaging bottle.

The post Bormioli Pharma Expands Capacity and Infrastructure for North American Market; Achieves 47% Sales Growth in the Region During 2023 first appeared on Packaging World Insights.
