DS Smith has unveiled a new fibre-based corrugated cardboard pack designed specifically for Geefeenboompje.nl, the Dutch online retailer known for its tree gift products. Described as 100% recyclable, the recyclable corrugated pack replaces an earlier packaging design and incorporates die-cut air openings that are intended to improve ventilation for the contents inside. The updated packaging also allows for a logo or personalised message to be printed on the outside, while Geefeenboompje.nl offers customers an optional paper-based sleeve as an added feature.

Geefeenboompje.nl sells tree gifts for special occasions through three main online product categories: trees in gift packs, gift sets, and letterbox-sized tree-growing kits. The company has supported the planting of more than 300,000 trees to date. Co-founder Remko Slokkers highlighted the broader operational benefits of the new recyclable corrugated pack, noting that the focus extended well beyond the unit cost of the box itself. “The improved packaging and material usage enhance the efficiency of the packing process and support a more streamlined supply chain approach,” Slokkers said. “It turned out to be financially uninteresting to look only at the price of a box. By placing our focus on process optimisation, we achieve much greater savings in storage, handling, and labour. The original box was cheaper, but far less efficient.”

The launch of the fibre-based packaging for Geefeenboompje.nl follows another recent development from DS Smith. Earlier this month, the company created a closed tray packaging format for the transport of kiwifruit and other fresh fruit and vegetables, developed for growers in Greece. That tray, made from fibre-based material using virgin paper, was designed to withstand transatlantic shipments lasting more than 45 days. These moves underscore DS Smith’s continued investment in sustainable packaging solutions across diverse product categories, from tree gift products to fresh produce logistics, with supply chain efficiency remaining a central focus in each new design.

The post DS Smith Launches Recyclable Corrugated Cardboard Pack for Geefeenboompje.nl Tree Gifts first appeared on Packaging World Insights.

NanoXplore and Techmer PM have jointly launched GrapheneBlack xGnP Masterbatch, a graphene-based material designed specifically for use in plastic film applications. The new product delivers more than 70% improvement in mechanical strength, according to NanoXplore, and could enable manufacturers to reduce film thickness by up to 20% without sacrificing tensile, tear or puncture performance. The graphene masterbatch for plastic film represents a significant development for packaging producers seeking stronger yet thinner materials.

The collaboration combines NanoXplore’s xGnP graphene technology with Techmer PM’s expertise in film applications and compounding. Techmer PM’s proprietary Techsperse dispersion technology plays a central role in distributing graphene uniformly throughout the material, which helps ensure consistent and repeatable results across production lots at commercial volumes. This graphene masterbatch for plastic film could also support higher levels of recycled content in film formulations without compromising performance an increasingly important consideration as the packaging industry navigates tighter sustainability regulations and circular economy goals.

NanoXplore president and CEO Rocco Marinaccio said: “The combination of NanoXplore’s new xGnP graphene technology and Techmer’s application development and compounding capabilities produced a genuine breakthrough for our joint customers one that neither company could have achieved alone.” On the product development side, Techmer PM brings in-house film production equipment, including a five-layer blown film line that enables small-scale sampling and process testing. This setup allows customers to refine formulations, evaluate multilayer structures and advance products toward market readiness.

Techmer PM CEO Craig Foster commented: “Our partnership with NanoXplore helped us bring a high-value graphene-based solution to market that directly addresses some of our customers’ most pressing performance and sustainability challenges while also driving meaningful cost savings. It’s a strong example of our commitment to delivering practical, forward-looking solutions that enable our customers’ success.”

NanoXplore filed a provisional patent in May 2026 related to the graphene technology underpinning the new product. The two companies plan to showcase the co-developed product line at the AMI Flexible Packaging Innovation and Recycling Conference in Milwaukee, US, scheduled for 24–25 June 2026. NanoXplore produces graphene at its facility in Montreal, Canada, where it maintains an annual production capacity of 4,000 metric tonnes. Techmer PM, founded in 1981, is a materials design company specializing in modifying the properties of technical polymers. Together, the partnership between NanoXplore and Techmer PM reflects a growing industry focus on leveraging advanced materials like graphene technology to meet both performance demands and sustainable packaging objectives in the flexible packaging sector. The introduction of recycled content–friendly solutions without performance trade-offs positions the graphene masterbatch for plastic film as a practical option for converters and brand owners navigating evolving regulatory landscapes.

The post NanoXplore and Techmer PM Launch Graphene Masterbatch for Plastic Films first appeared on Packaging World Insights.

X-Rite Pantone, a leader in color standards and color science, has introduced Offset360, a new solution aimed at improving offset press color control by modernizing color management on existing offset production lines. Announced on June 9, 2026, the system combines press-side scanning automation, quality control and reporting software, and automated ink presetting within a closed-loop workflow. By bringing these functions together, the company said printers can reduce make-ready time, achieve more accurate color reproduction, and improve production efficiency without the expense of purchasing a new press. According to X-Rite Pantone, the solution can lower upfront investment by up to 60% compared with assembling multiple standalone systems. “Many printers look to new presses to solve color or efficiency challenges, but the issue often lies in the scanning and control systems,” said Shajith Ambalathody, Application Engineer & Technical Specialist, X-Rite Pantone. “Disconnected workflows and manual adjustments can slow production, increase waste, and make it difficult to maintain consistent color across jobs and locations. Offset360 helps printers update existing offset presses with a connected, automated approach to color control while lowering upfront investment by up to 60% compared to piecing together multiple standalone solutions.”

The company highlighted early results from Cartonajes PANS, a packaging provider serving the pharmaceutical industry. Enrique González García, Print Manager at Cartonajes PANS, said the implementation delivered measurable gains, particularly in reducing setup times. “We’ve seen improvements in several areas. One key area is reduced setup time, which for me, is perhaps the most important,” he said. García also noted the role of measurement systems in maintaining color consistency and supporting operators with varying levels of experience. “Nowadays, operators aren’t trained like before, when training took 10–15 years. Today’s market doesn’t allow for that. With these measurement systems, you have the assurance that if the color isn’t within a Delta of three, the operator can’t proceed. I’d start counting from 2023—since then, we’ve seen about a 15% reduction in color-related issues.”

Offset360 combines IntelliTrax2 press-side scanning, MeasureColor process control software, MeasureColor Reports, and X-Rite’s ink preset and closed-loop technologies into a connected workflow. Operators can access real-time spectral data and visual scoring at press, enabling faster adjustments across different substrates and paper sources. The implementation process begins with an assessment of production goals, color challenges, and existing operating environments, followed by deployment, installation, operator training, and validation. X-Rite Pantone said ongoing support includes annual audits designed to sustain performance and efficiency. Built on an open architecture, the platform integrates with a wide range of production systems, supports G7 and ISO-based process controls, and enables color data to be applied across presses and locations to strengthen offset press color control, reduce variability, and support continuous improvement.

The post X-Rite Pantone Launches Offset360 to Modernize Offset Press Color Control first appeared on Packaging World Insights.

HAVER & BOECKER is marking two decades of its ADAMS Technology, a system that has been used across the cement, building materials, food and chemical sectors since its introduction in 2005. The technology combines tubular film with Form-Fill-Seal (FFS) processes and is designed to improve product protection, cleanliness and energy efficiency, using up to 50% less energy per bag than conventional systems. Integrated into the ROTO-PACKER® RS, the technology enables a fully enclosed FFS packing process, helping reduce product loss, improve weight accuracy, optimize transportation and produce highly palletizable bags.

“We knew some industries — cement, building materials and pigment packing plants especially needed a new packing option to keep their product safe and uncontaminated throughout the shipping and storage process. The development of ADAMS technology didn’t just give packing operations a highly efficient machine, it also increased the protection of their product once packing is completed. FFS bags help ensure our customers’ product is protected and uncontaminated throughout the packing and shipping process,” said Mark Wehling, head of sales group minerals at HAVER & BOECKER. “We’re excited to introduce the ROTO-PACKER® RST featuring ADAMS® technology in light of the 20th anniversary of this advanced product.”

The ROTO-PACKER® RS addresses challenges associated with long-distance shipping and extended logistics chains by cutting and welding each bag shut to create a fully sealed, weatherproof package. This approach reduces film consumption while allowing products to be transported over greater distances and stored for longer periods with lower risk of spills or contamination. The rotary packing machine operates at rates of 400 to 1,200 bags per hour with up to 10 filling spouts and features a compact design intended to simplify installation and reduce space requirements. Its enclosed housing supports cleaner powder-filling operations, while large access doors improve cleaning and maintenance, contributing to enhanced weight accuracy and longer equipment life.

The RSL version uses an air-filling module that conveys product into packaging through air pressure and can be equipped with a fully ventilated base plate. Both filling options are designed to consume more than 50% less energy than traditional filling modules. The machine also incorporates QUAT²RO® AI solutions, including Bag Check, which verifies that the correct bag is loaded before filling begins, and MatEx Check, which uses a high-definition camera to detect bursting bags and stop operations within seconds. Through its BESPOKE consulting service, HAVER & BOECKER also assists customers in selecting and designing FFS bags that support a harmonized filling process. As the company celebrates 20 years of ADAMS Technology, it continues to position the ROTO-PACKER® RS as a solution focused on efficiency, product protection and operational reliability.

The post HAVER & BOECKER Marks 20 Years of ADAMS Technology with ROTO-PACKER RS first appeared on Packaging World Insights.

UPM has introduced a simplified approach to adhesive selection for converters and brand owners operating in sectors where label performance is critical. The company has launched purpose-built solutions tailored to specific end-use environments, including UPM PharmaSure™ for pharmaceutical applications, UPM Vetro™ for wine and spirits, and UPM Endurance™ for oil and industrial chemical labeling. The products form part of the UPM Raflatac™ label material portfolio and are intended to help customers match adhesive performance with application requirements. The new range of Adhesive Solutions is designed to address conditions where conventional, general-purpose adhesives may not provide the necessary level of performance.

Different industries place distinct demands on labeling materials, requiring adhesives capable of withstanding challenging operating environments. Pharmaceutical packaging, for example, must preserve label integrity during sterilization processes, cold-chain storage and use on small-diameter vials. In the wine and spirits sector, labels are exposed to humidity, refrigerated displays and prolonged ice-bucket immersion. Industrial applications create another set of challenges, with labels often required to remain attached to difficult substrates while enduring chemical exposure, mechanical stress and hot-fill conditions. According to UPM, each of these environments involves unique technical requirements, regulatory considerations and operational risks associated with label failure.

The company stated that the formulations behind UPM PharmaSure, UPM Vetro and UPM Endurance are supported by decades of experience in demanding labeling environments as well as a global innovation network. The products have been developed to address performance requirements relevant to their respective industries and are backed by pre-assessed performance data together with application documentation. This information is intended to support qualification procedures and regulatory processes for both converters and brand owners seeking reliable Adhesive Solutions for specialized applications.

Commenting on the launch, Christian Szameit, Senior Vice President, Global Markets at UPM Adhesive Materials, said: “With demanding label applications, adhesive selection is a critical decision. Our purpose-built adhesive solutions help our customers choose the right performance for their end-use.”

The post UPM Launches Adhesive Solutions for Label Application first appeared on Packaging World Insights.

The event will take place on October 27-28, 2026 in Minneapolis.

The global food system is at an inflection point. Climate volatility, regulatory pressure, and geopolitical disruption are colliding with thin margins and rising consumer expectations, exposing just how unprepared today’s supply chains are to deliver resilient, affordable, and sustainable food at scale.

Progress is stalling because the industry remains gridlocked on a fundamental question: who pays for transformation? The reality is clear: no single enterprise can solve this alone. If vulnerabilities aren’t addressed across the entire value chain, the consequences will ripple beyond sourcing and supply, to impact consumer trust and long‑term food security.

Reuters Events: Transform Food & Agriculture USA will convene 200 key decision makers in sustainability, R&D and procurement from across the food web to collaborate and unlock new strategies for tangible impact. Designed for executives driving real change, this forum harnesses collective intelligence to realign incentives, de‑risk investment, and turn sustainability pilots into programs with transformational benefits at scale.

The agri-food leaders driving this transformation and confirmed to speak, include:

Nick Martin, VP, Corporate Sustainability, Post Holdings

Why do attendees choose #TransformFood?

“Strong thought leadership is essential to guide the Food and Agriculture industry as it navigates an increasingly complex ecosystem and works to meet rapidly evolving consumer expectations.” – EVP, Chief Research & Development Officer, Mondelēz International

SupplyOne Inc., a leading national distributor of packaging solutions, has announced the acquisition of Compass Packaging Solutions, a move designed to deepen the company’s presence across New England. The transaction reinforces SupplyOne’s continued strategy of regional growth through targeted acquisitions of well-established, customer-focused packaging businesses.

Compass Packaging Solutions, headquartered in New England, has built a solid reputation for supplying corrugated packaging and protective packaging products to a broad base of regional customers. With this acquisition, SupplyOne gains not only Compass Packaging’s existing client relationships but also its operational infrastructure and experienced team all of which align with SupplyOne’s broader service model. The deal marks yet another chapter in the company’s SupplyOne New England expansion strategy, which has been gaining momentum over recent quarters.

SupplyOne has been actively pursuing growth in the northeastern United States, and the addition of Compass Packaging Solutions adds meaningful scale in a market where demand for reliable, high-quality corrugated packaging and protective packaging continues to grow. The acquisition is expected to enhance SupplyOne’s ability to serve both existing and new customers across the region with a wider array of packaging products and value-added services.

The leadership at SupplyOne has indicated that integration of the Compass Packaging team will proceed in alignment with the company’s established onboarding practices, ensuring continuity of service for customers. This acquisition reflects SupplyOne’s commitment to building a robust national network through regional strength and the SupplyOne New England expansion represents a significant component of that long-term vision. By combining Compass Packaging’s deep local knowledge with SupplyOne’s national resources, the combined entity is well-positioned to meet growing regional packaging demands efficiently and at scale.

The post SupplyOne Acquires Compass Packaging Solutions to Expand in New England first appeared on Packaging World Insights.

CANPACK has partnered with Art of Packaging to encourage the next generation of designers to explore new possibilities in aluminum can packaging. Announced in Kraków, Poland, the collaboration is aimed at students, young designers and emerging creative talent, offering them an opportunity to rethink conventional approaches to can decoration while developing concepts that can be translated into practical packaging solutions. Through the initiative, participants are encouraged to view the aluminum can as a creative medium capable of supporting ambitious visual ideas without sacrificing production feasibility. The Art of Packaging partnership seeks to help designers better understand how creative concepts can move from design stage to real-world application.

Drawing on its expertise in eight-color dry offset printing and decorative effects, CANPACK will use the platform to demonstrate how advanced printing technologies can support more ambitious packaging designs. The company said the collaboration is intended to bridge the gap between creative vision and manufacturing execution while encouraging designers to push creative boundaries. “Partnering with Art of Packaging allows us to go beyond visibility and focus on impact,” says Michał Schilbach, Global Marketing Manager at CANPACK. “This collaboration is an opportunity to showcase what’s possible when creativity is supported by the right technical expertise. It’s about helping designers think bigger – and showing how dry offset printing can bring their ideas to life beautifully and consistently on an aluminum can.”

According to CANPACK, aluminum cans provide greater creative flexibility than many designers assume. The company noted that dry offset printing can deliver detailed graphics, rich colors and decorative effects at commercial scale, enabling distinctive visual concepts to be produced efficiently. “Great can design starts with ambition,” Michał Schilbach adds. “When creative potential is understood and supported, even the most intricate concepts can be realized. That’s the mindset this partnership celebrates – and what CANPACK works to enable every day.” The Art of Packaging Awards, established in 2006, continue to serve as a national platform recognizing innovation and creativity in packaging design.

The winner of the Aluminum Can Design award will be announced during the Art of Packaging Gala on 14 September 2026.

The post CANPACK, Art of Packaging Partnership Encourages Aluminum Can Design Talent first appeared on Packaging World Insights.
