US-based corrugated box producer Sheets Unlimited has placed an order with Valmet to supply a state-of-the-art corrugator quality control system designed to resolve critical production issues linked to moisture imbalance. Recognized as a primary driver of board warp, moisture imbalance will be targeted through Valmetโs advanced technological scope, which is structured to support board quality, operating efficiency, and overall converting results.
The comprehensive scope of supply features complete control of paper temperature, moisture balance, total moisture, and warp via a seamless interface with the corrugatorโs existing heating elements. Furthermore, the installation incorporates high-precision moisture measurement technology alongside an automatic moisturising system.
Highlighting the decision to select this technology, Sheets Unlimited manufacturing director Krist Leland said: โWe had the opportunity to see Valmetโs warp control solution in operation at another manufacturer in Europe. What stands out is its ability to address the root cause of warp: moisture imbalance. โWith this solution, we are well positioned to reduce variability, improve converting performance, and deliver products of even higher quality to both our internal and external customers.โ
Project Delivery Timeline and Technological Capabilities
The order was officially booked in Valmetโs second-quarter 2026 intake, with the financial value remaining undisclosed. Delivery of the equipment is planned for the fourth quarter of 2026, and full commissioning is scheduled for January 2027.
The innovative corrugator quality control system integrates online measurement of moisture, temperature, and warp. Applied in the precise control of various corrugated board grades, the solution works to effectively minimize sheet warping while simultaneously enhancing board bonding.
Commenting on the operational benefits of the deployment, Valmet North America automation solutions board converting automation sales manager David Maddux said: โWith Valmet IQ, the customer will benefit from improved process stability, more uniform product quality, and reduced operator workload. โThis project demonstrates how intelligent automation can enable more streamlined operations and enhanced overall performance.โ
Valmet Expands Global Packaging Presence
This supply agreement reflects Valmet’s ongoing momentum in the paper and board sectors globally. Last month, Valmet obtained an order from Sun Paper for a full board production line, as well as automation systems and life cycle support, for the companyโs mill in Nanning, China.
