DS Smith has revealed plans to reinforce its packaging production capabilities in Denmark through a significant upgrade at its facility in Grenaa, Djursland. The company said it will invest up to DKK 100 million (€13.4m) in the site, a move designed to strengthen its ability to deliver packaging solutions to customers across the region while enhancing competitiveness in northern Europe.

According to the company, DS Smith invests DKK 100M expecting to improve operational efficiency and provide advantages for customers that rely on automated packing production and logistics lines. The upgrade focuses on improving both production performance and the ability to meet evolving requirements from businesses increasingly adopting automation in their packaging and logistics operations.

Central to the project is the installation of an advanced rotary die cutting line designed for flexographic printing. The new equipment will include five printing units as well as a Göpfert rotary die cutter 16/28 high board line. The system integrates servo driven technology, vacuum sheet transport and automatic register control to support high levels of precision during production.

DS Smith invests DKK 100M in the facility and said the machinery is designed to maintain accuracy throughout the manufacturing process while allowing rapid changeovers between different product runs. The technology also enables the creation of complex die cuts, offering greater flexibility in the types of packaging formats that can be produced.

“We see a clear trend where an increasing number of customers are automating their packing and logistics processes,” said Kristian Eriksen, sales director at DS Smith Denmark. “This places significantly higher demands on consistent quality and precision in packaging. With this investment, we are strengthening our ability to deliver solutions that perform seamlessly in our customers’ automated flows both for today and in the future.”

The company noted that once the upgraded packaging and production line is fully operational, capacity at the Grenaa facility is expected to rise by up to 15 million m² of corrugated board per year.

In addition to the Danish investment, DS Smith is also moving forward with improvements at another Nordic site. The company confirmed that its packaging facility in Bredasten, Värnamo in Sweden will undergo an expansion that includes a 3,000 sqm extension. Work on the project will be implemented in phases, with completion anticipated by June 2027.
