Food and beverage packaging maker Pactiv Evergreen has collaborated with polystyrene producer AmSty to introduce sustainable polystyrene food packaging products.

Based in Illinois, US, Pactiv Evergreen will offer its customers foam polystyrene packaging products made with AmStyโ€™s post-consumer recycled content derived from advanced recycling technologies.

Pactiv Evergreen food merchandising business unit president Eric Wulf said: โ€œPactiv Evergreen produces thousands of products in more than a dozen materials that protect, package and display fresh food and beverages.

โ€œOur broad material expertise enables us to support our customers quickly and effectively as they seek more sustainable products. Our collaboration with AmSty expands our portfolio of circular packaging, and weโ€™re pleased to offer this solution to our customers.โ€

Pactiv Evergreen packaging will use AmStyโ€™s ISCC PLUS-certified recycled polystyrene based on a mass-balanced approach. ISCC PLUS is a widely accepted certification procedure for circular content that audits the entire supply chain.

AmSty polymers and sustainability vice president Tim Barnette said: โ€œWe are excited to collaborate with Pactiv Evergreen in this groundbreaking effort. With our post-consumer polystyrene recycling process now certified by ISCC, we can introduce and scale up polystyrene circularity in a meaningful way.

โ€œAs brands look toward more sustainable food merchandising and packaging options, polystyrene foam makes sense. Its lightweight and performance qualities make it a desirable material. Now, with the addition of circular content through advanced recycling, it makes even more sense.โ€

Pactiv Evergreen will start offering consumers to purchase packaging that is linked to ISCC PLUS-certified post-consumer recycled polystyrene in the first half of this year.

Pactiv Evergreen is a producer and distributor of fresh food service and food merchandising products and fresh beverage cartons in North America. It has a broad range of products that protect, package and display food and beverages for consumers.

AmSty produces styrene monomer and polystyrene to offer sustainable solutions and services to customers in a variety of industries.
