Boral has officially announced a significant shift in its product presentation, moving its range of bagged dry mix products from traditional paper bags to recycled plastic packaging. This transition specifically involves goods manufactured at the company’s Maldon facility in New South Wales. The new material is not only derived from recycled sources but is also engineered to be fully recyclable at the conclusion of its lifecycle. Starting in mid-July 2026, the rollout will happen progressively across various product lines, including mortar, concrete, grout, sand and cement, and diverse sand-based mixtures. This modernization effort is intended to address the practical limitations of paper-based storage while supporting the company’s broader environmental objectives.
The implementation of Form, Fill and Seal (FSS) technology is a core component of this change, providing a more robust barrier against the elements. Boral indicated that the recycled plastic packaging creates an airtight seal that significantly improves the durability of the bags and extends the shelf life of the contents. Because the bags provide superior weather resistance, construction materials can now be stored outdoors without the immediate need for secondary protection, thereby reducing damage and potential product waste on-site. Rajeev Ramankutty, Boral Executive General Manager, Cement, explained the motivation behind the change: โBoral is always looking at ways to enhance and innovate how we do things and deliver for clients, and the transition to recycled plastic packaging responds directly to how our customers operate.โ He further noted that while paper bags have been the industry standard for many years, their vulnerabilities in storage and durability often lead to product loss.
In addition to structural improvements, the redesigned bags focus on sustainability and ease of use. By adopting materials that facilitate circular outcomes in the building sector, the firm aims to minimize waste throughout the entire value chain. Furthermore, the bags feature updated iconography designed to help users identify product applications quickly, which is particularly beneficial for customers with non-English speaking backgrounds. Ramankutty highlighted the practical benefits for resellers and contractors alike, stating: โWeโre aligning our packaging with real-world site conditions. We are giving resellers greater flexibility to store product outdoors, reducing damage and waste, and making our range easier to use and understand from an end-customer perspective.โ He added that this transition represents a practical advancement for the companyโs 80-year legacy of innovation, stating: โOur business has a proud 80-year history of innovating and providing solutions that have helped to build modern Australia. This is a practical step forward that strengthens both performance and sustainability across our bagged dry mix portfolio, while meeting the needs of our resellers and customers.โ Boral expects to extend this phased rollout to its wider bagged portfolio over time.
