Compass Group UK & Ireland has announced a major expansion in its collaboration with Cauli, a technology-driven provider of a reusable packaging system. This strategic rollout follows a comprehensive proof-of-concept phase designed to test and refine circular solutions within high-volume environments. The initiative is being deployed across several key sectors, including the Restaurant Associates Group, Eurest, Chartwells, and various healthcare facilities, to significantly bolster the companyโs waste reduction objectives.
Smart Tracking and Operational Efficiency
The reusable packaging system encompasses a wide range of items, including coffee cups, takeaway containers, and pizza boxes. Each unit is designed to be reused up to 400 times and is equipped with a unique Digital ID. This Digital ID allows for precise monitoring of the container’s lifecycle, ensuring high levels of Data transparency throughout the supply chain. By utilizing smart tracking technologies, the system enables a Frictionless return process for customers, which has already resulted in the elimination of an estimated 383,000 single-use items. To further optimize the process, the partnership includes the integration of AI-powered Reverse Vending Machines (RVM) to automate container collection and provide additional Data transparency regarding reuse rates.
Sustainability Commitments and Long-Term Targets
This expansion is a core component of the recently introduced Our Planet Promise, which outlines the organization’s sustainability journey. The group has set rigorous targets, including a 5% reduction in food waste by FY26 against a FY25 baseline. Furthermore, the company aims to reduce single-use Foodservice packaging by 30% by 2035. Efforts to transition from traditional Foodservice packaging are paired with a goal to increase recycling and Anaerobic digestion to 65% by 2035. Utilizing methods like Anaerobic digestion ensures that organic waste is managed responsibly alongside the reduction of plastic and paper waste.
Leadership Perspectives on Circularity
Ashleigh Taylor, head of environment, Compass Group UK & Ireland, said: โWeโve been really impressed by Cauliโs innovative reusable cups and container initiative, and the statistics weโve seen back up that the system can have a positive impact in reducing single use packaging. We are now looking to roll out Cauli further within our business, which will support our commitment to reducing single-use packaging and help our clients in becoming more sustainable.โ
Mingqiao Zhao, co-founder at Cauli, said: โA truly circular economy relies on accountability, not just alternatives. Many reuse schemes fail because without tracking, packaging simply disappears. By integrating smart traceability into the Cauli Reuse System, we keep containers in circulation and deliver data-backed waste reduction at scale. Partnering with Compass has allowed us to prove our technology in high-volume, cross-sector environments, and we are thrilled to expand this rollout to help more of their clients seamlessly transition to a Frictionless, circular model.โ
