HEIDELBERG and the pfenning group have entered into a partnership to develop integrated solutions for pharmaceutical packaging production, combining packaging, production and logistics into an end-to-end process. The collaboration is intended to improve efficiency, transparency and compliance across regulated supply chains as requirements for traceability, documentation and flexible packaging continue to increase.
The partnership expands HEIDELBERGโs role as an end-to-end system integrator for packaging production, extending its focus beyond printing into processes that precede and follow the printing stage. For pfenning, the collaboration adds integrated packaging and logistics capabilities for existing pharmaceutical customers.
Packaging and Logistics Move Toward an Integrated Model
The two companies are pooling complementary expertise to develop integrated and scalable concepts for pharma packaging. HEIDELBERG contributes industrial printing technologies, workflow integration, automation and quality-oriented production processes, while pfenning brings expertise in pharmaceutical packaging, serialization, aggregation, track-and-trace, and compliant logistics processes.
The collaboration focuses on:
- Integrating printing, packaging and logistics processes
- Connecting workflow, printing and packaging technologies with data systems
- Supporting serialization, aggregation and track-and-trace requirements
- Improving transparency and process control across regulated supply chains
By linking the systems involved, the partners aim to create seamless information flows and complete documentation throughout the supply chain. The approach is designed to support greater control and transparency across pharma packaging operations.
โPackaging is an important growth market for HEIDELBERG. As a system integrator, we are systematically expanding our solutions to cover the entire manufacturing process in packaging production. With the pfenning group, we are gaining a competent partner to extend this end-to-end approach to meet the high demands of the pharmaceutical industry,โ says Jรผrgen Otto, CEO of HEIDELBERG. โThis collaboration is thus another milestone in our strategy to build a complete ecosystem for production and logistics together with strong partners and to establish ourselves as the industryโs system integrator.โ
Pharma Packaging Strategy Extends Beyond Printing
The partnership comes as the pharmaceutical sector faces increasing demands for traceability, serialization and regulatory compliance, alongside expectations for flexible and cost-effective packaging and logistics processes. The companies intend to address these requirements through closer integration of packaging production and downstream logistics.
Key areas of the collaboration include:
- Pharmaceutical packaging production and logistics integration
- Digital connection of systems and workflows
- Serialization and aggregation capabilities
- Good Distribution Practice (GDP) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) compliant logistics processes
pfenning said the partnership strengthens its ability to provide integrated packaging and logistics solutions to pharmaceutical customers. Rana Matthias Nag, Spokesman for the Management Board of the pfenning group, said, โThe partnership with HEIDELBERG strengthens our ability to offer integrated packaging and logistics solutions to our existing customers in the pharmaceutical industry. By closely integrating packaging, data management, and logistics, we create greater transparency, compliance, and operational efficiency throughout the entire value chain.โ
The companies said the collaboration specifically expands HEIDELBERGโs packaging system integration strategy into downstream pharmaceutical packaging and logistics processes. The partnership is focused on developing integrated solutions for the future of pharma packaging.
