IFCO, a global leader in reusable packaging for fresh foods, has introduced IFCO Digital, debuting its new Tracking-as-a-Service (TaaS) platform. The launch marks a significant step in the company’s digital transformation.
Since 1992, IFCO has promoted circular logistics through its SmartCycle pooling model, making sure reusable packaging containers (RPCs) are collected, cleaned, and put back into circulation. With IFCO Digital, the company is taking this further. The platform combines real-time tracking, artificial intelligence, and data analytics to give supply chains clearer insights, better visibility, and more efficient operations.
The IFCO Digital TaaS platform is built to address common challenges in global supply chains, including misplaced or stolen assets, slow return processes, and limited shipment visibility. Using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and GPS, the system monitors RPCs in real time. It tracks their location, temperature, and condition throughout the journey.
Unlike most systems, the IFCO Digital TaaS platform needs no setup or added infrastructure from customers. Smart trackers are fitted directly to crates and pallets, managing connectivity without gates or fixed installations. The plug-and-play setup makes it quick to roll out, easy to expand, and cost-efficient to operate.
Pilots of the TaaS solution are already running with growers, retailers, and logistics partners across North America and Europe. The trials are putting the technology through its paces and gathering real-world data to support a broader rollout in 2026.
IFCO’s digital transformation is already well underway. More than one billion RPCs have been digitally scanned at IFCO service centers across Europe. This milestone shows just how deeply digital connectivity is embedded in the company’s operations.
“Our digital solutions have already enabled us to track more than one billion trips of reusable packaging containers – a milestone that reflects the scale and maturity of IFCO’s digital transformation. With Tracking-as-a-Service, we’re taking this even further, turning data into actionable insights that make our customers’ supply chains more transparent, efficient, and sustainable.” said Dr. Sebastian Grams, Chief Digital Officer (CDO) at IFCO.
