Paper and packaging firm Mondi and Swiss converter ATS-Tanner have teamed up to create a new kraft paper bundle packaging to hold individually labelled products or bundles and minimise unnecessary plastic.
Recyclable in existing paper recycling streams, the new paper band intends to replace the plastic on single or bundle packages and is suitable for drink, fruit and vegetable and e-commerce end-uses.
ATS-Tanner leveraged Mondiโs kraft paper Advantage MF SpringPack to transform it into a band by adding a functional barrier property on both sides of the paper. The paper is then sealed through ultrasound to eliminate the need for any adhesive.
Mondi said that the process secures the product with the least amount of packaging possible, preventing waste and providing a cost-effective solution.
The coated bands are sold by ATS-Tanner under the trade name TruePaper.
Mondi speciality kraft paper international key account manager Carsten Breiter said: โBy combining world-leading expertise in sustainable packaging with ATS-Tannerโs machinery and skills, we have together created a system that offers great product protection while reducing unnecessary plastic.
โThis is the perfect example of strong collaboration producing a new solution that does just that.โ
Mondiโs kraft paper can support weights of up to 20kg, making it ideal for fruit and vegetable bundles as well as multipacks of bottles and other consumer goods.
The paper maintains the better quality of printing results to effectively express brand, product, return, and responsible waste management messaging to the end user, the packaging and paper firm claimed.
The kraft paper used for the paper band is produced by Mondi using verified, ethically sourced, and renewable resources. It can be recycled in Europeโs current paper recycling systems and meets Germanyโs ratio of 95/5 requirement.
ATS-Tanner owner and CEO Serge Tanner said: โTruePaper is a resource efficient solution that can โ depending on the banding machine used โ wrap products measuring up to 1,300x500mm and is convenient to store.
โUsing paper instead of plastic is not the only advantage: an ultrasonic banding machine from ATS-Tanner consumes 98% less energy than it would take to pack a like-sized delivery using a shrink-wrapping machine.โ
