LyondellBasell, a world leader in recycled polymers, announced a joint venture to create next-generation film packaging technology for bio-based cosmetic packaging. The project is a partnership between Futamura Chemical, an industry leader in sustainable packaging production; Iwatani Corporation, one of Japan’s largest trading firms; and Shiseido, a more than 150-year-old beauty industry leader. This new bio-based cosmetic packaging series blends LyondellBasell’s bio-based polypropylene (PP) polymer, CirculenRenew, into the outer packaging film of products in a curated selection of Shiseido’s Clé de Peau Beauté range.
CirculenRenew, which contains measurable and certified C14 renewable content, forms an integral part of LyondellBasell’s Circulen family of sustainable solutions. Importantly, these CirculenRenew grades can be seamlessly introduced as drop-in solutions without the need for modifications to existing processing systems.
“At LYB, our purpose is creating solutions for everyday sustainable living. We take pride in cooperating with Shiseido, Futamura, and Iwatani on this initiative, supporting brand owners in achieving their environmental targets and helping to reduce product carbon footprints in the beauty industry,” said Allen Yu, senior vice president of LyondellBasell, Asia Pacific.
Shiseido has set out its vision to create a sustainable future with happiness through power of beauty by 2030, as expressed in its corporate mission BEAUTY INNOVATIONS FOR A BETTER WORLD.
Futamura Chemical, through its “SusFi®” line of packaging films, has been contributing to actively promoting solutions for a more sustainable society. By incorporating LyondellBasell’s CirculenRenew polymers into new developments with Shiseido, the company has broadened the “SusFi®” product family and strengthened its ability to deliver a stable supply of environmentally responsible materials to the market.
Iwatani Corporation is guided by its corporate philosophy “Become a person needed by society, as those needed by society can prosper,” .The company is working towards the realization of a carbon-neutral society. The company’s medium-term management plan is to process 100,000 tons of bioplastics by fiscal year 2027, leveraging its business segments to support this change. By working together with LyondellBasell, Iwatani is actively creating the market for bio-PP resins in Japan, and Futamura’s and Shiseido’s uptake of CirculenRenew was a milestone on the way to that vision.
