DS Smith has introduced a fiber-based packaging solution for Famifarm Oy with a hatch design that speeds up packing and unpacking. The transport boxes can be opened with minimal effort, ensuring efficiency while safeguarding fresh herb and salad products as they move through distribution to retail and grocery outlets.
According to the company, the new herb and salad packaging accelerates unpacking line processes by as much as four times compared to earlier models. Once emptied, the boxes can also be folded down with ease. “Our customers, such as the retail chains, have really liked the new functional transport box, which saves a lot of time for their employees. We value our packaging partner’s transparency, commitment to sustainability, and reliability, and DS Smith has demonstrated an in-depth understanding of our operations which actively contributed to our joint product development,” said Jussi Loimusalo, CEO of Famifarm Oy.
Famifarm Oy’s transport boxes showcase brand messaging prominently on the exterior surface. “Our newly innovated corrugated cardboard boxes are of prime quality and look great. The brand must be prominently displayed.” Loimusalo added.
The company, Finland’s largest producer of potted herbs and salads, is recognised for its Järvikylä brand and logo, featuring an illustration of its family manor house and an inscription of the year 1674. Famifarm Oy’s product portfolio began with potted leaf lettuce, later expanding to include chives, chilli in pots, and the ‘Home Cook’s Favourite Herbs’ line with basil, thyme, and oregano.
The concept for the latest herb and salad packaging was jointly created by DS Smith experts Jyrki Petrelius, Cluster Design Creative Specialist, and Veli-Matti Karvonen, Automation Expert and Development Manager. “This packaging solution was designed for an automated packaging line and is intended to enhance the business of our customers’ customers, i.e retail stores and outlets. At the same time, the solution is versatile and suitable for large and small retail and grocery environments. The packaging protects fresh products as before, but now speeds up unpacking ” Petrelius noted.
DS Smith continues to advance its Now and Next sustainability strategy, which underpins its goal of Redefining Packaging for a Changing World. Through this programme, the company is driving an industry-wide shift toward a circular economy while providing sustainable circular solutions to customers across thirty-four countries worldwide.
