Carlsberg Britvic has partnered with DS Smith to launch a fresh OTOR8 ‘Bag-in-Box’ design. The partnership is the first move in a broader project to enhance supply chain sustainability and operational effectiveness for the multi-beverage group. The new packaging, which replaces the OTOR4, has an improved eight-sided design that provides more strength and enables 25% more boxes per pallet.
By maximising pallet space, the OTOR8 Bag-in-Box design reduces the number of lorries needed for the 115-mile route between Carlsberg Britvic’s Leeds manufacturing facility and its national distribution centre in Lutterworth. Beyond lowering transport demand and associated carbon emissions, the vertical format also improves warehouse storage, minimises leakage risk, and enhances overall stability in the supply chain. The sustainable packaging launch is part of DS Smith’s broader partnership with Carlsberg Britvic to reinforce packaging efficiency and sustainability goals.
“At a time when efficiency and sustainability remain front of mind for our customers, we’re thrilled to have delivered an effective packaging solution in collaboration with Carlsberg Britvic. Our innovation will see fewer consignment vehicles on the road, lower transport emissions, and contribute to supply chain efficiency. Innovation, and sustainability are at the heart of what we do as a company and this is the first stage of the innovative ‘Bag in Box’ project as we support Carlsberg Britvic on their sustainability journey.” said Liz Manuvelpillai, sales, marketing, and innovation director at DS Smith
Tom Fiennes, sustainability director at Carlsberg Britvic, added: “Every year Carlsberg Britvic produces more than 25 million litres of soft drinks to be served on dispense in pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants – and we couldn’t do this without high-quality, innovative packaging. The new OTOR8 bag in box from DS Smith means sturdier packaging for our customers, reduced storage space for everyone and, from Pepsi MAX™ and 7UP to Tango and R. White’s lemonade, reduced carbon emissions– another milestone in Carlsberg Britvic’s journey to net zero carbon emissions.”
Aligned with its Now and Next strategy to Redefine Packaging for a Changing World, DS Smith applies its Circular Design Metrics to assess packaging performance against eight circularity indicators. The company continues to advance industry-wide adoption of a circular economy, supplying sustainable packaging solutions for customers in beverage, food, FMCG, e-commerce, automotive, and industrial sectors across thirty-four countries.
