SIG and Nutrition from Water (NXW) have joined forces in a global partnership to create product concepts that combine algae-based protein beverages with aseptic packaging. The collaboration seeks to tackle nutritional deficiencies in fast-growing economies and bring protein-rich drinks to the communities that need them most.
The partnership grew out of MISTA, the San Francisco-based food innovation platform that SIG joined in 2023. MISTA connects leading food, ingredient, and technology companies to push change across the global food system. With the United Nations projecting the world population to hit 10 billion by 2050, the demand for accessible, healthy, and sustainable diets is growing rapidly.
SIG and NXW are concentrating on regions where nutrient deficiencies are most common. NXW’s algae-based protein innovations, combined with SIG’s aseptic cartons and pouches, will be used to create beverages loaded with water algae proteins and essential micronutrients. The range will stretch from simple nutrition for lower-income consumers to premium drinks with added protein.
NXW’s bioprocessing turns microalgae strains into high-performing ingredients. The Marine Whey™ range provides protein- and fiber-packed powders that are easy to digest and non-GMO. These ingredients can either supplement or replace traditional animal and plant proteins, giving manufacturers worldwide new ways to tackle malnutrition and macronutrient gaps.
SIG’s aseptic packaging keeps products fresh for long periods. The packaging does this without refrigeration or usage of any preservatives. Its flexible filling systems can handle different formats and volumes, making it easier to get these beverages to market.
The partnership to create beverages with aseptic packaging will also leverage SIG’s global innovation centers to speed up product development, support joint experimentation, and engage directly with both customers and consumers. Applications could include yogurt-like beverages and protein-fortified drinks tailored to specific nutritional needs.
Federico Duarte, CEO at NXW, said: “Our partnership with SIG is exciting because it allows us to look at nutrition as a whole system – from how biotechnology enables better nutrition, to how it’s packaged, distributed, and understood by consumers. The alignment could not be stronger: Together, we can unlock access to world-class nutrition for everyone, everywhere.”
Norman Gierow, Director Global Customer Marketing at SIG, added: “At SIG, we recognize the global challenges impacting the entire food and beverage industry. Addressing these issues requires strong collaboration with like-minded partners. We’re thrilled to join forces with NXW, whose innovative marine-based protein solution supports more accessible and nutritious food options. Combined with our unique aseptic filling technology and versatile aseptic packaging portfolio, we’re poised to deliver impactful, future-ready products to customers worldwide.”
