UK-based film manufacturer Futamura and Dutch labelstock producer Bio4life have jointly developed a certified home- and industrial compostable pressure-sensitive adhesive label designed specifically for fresh fruit and vegetables โ a development that directly addresses one of the most persistent waste challenges in fresh produce packaging.
The newly developed compostable produce labels bring together two distinct but complementary technologies. Futamura contributes its NatureFlex cellulose films as the facestock, while Bio4life provides its BioTAK adhesive technology as the bonding component. NatureFlex films are cellulose-based materials derived from wood pulp, making them a renewable alternative to conventional fossil-based plastic films. BioTAK, on the other hand, is a certified compostable adhesive specifically engineered to work with compostable substrates.
Together, the two technologies form a label that the companies confirm is suitable for use on apples, citrus fruits, avocados, and kiwis, and one that can be processed through both home and industrial composting systems. In addition, labels made with NatureFlex films are also suitable for anaerobic digestion, broadening the end-of-life options available to producers and waste processors alike.
Futamura and Bio4life have been clear about the problem their solution seeks to address. Conventional produce stickers typically rely on fossil-based plastics and non-compostable adhesives. When consumers dispose of fruit and vegetable skins directly into organic or food waste streams โ a common and understandable practice โ these stickers enter composting systems where they do not break down. The result is contamination of organic waste streams that undermines composting quality and efficiency.
Compostable produce labels of this kind offer a straightforward resolution: when the label goes into the compost along with the fruit skin, it breaks down as part of the organic material rather than compromising it.
Regulatory Context: The PPWR Deadline Ahead
The timing of this development is directly tied to incoming European legislation. The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, widely referred to as the PPWR, is scheduled to apply from 12 February 2028. Both Futamura and Bio4life have noted that the fresh produce industry has one remaining harvest cycle in which to trial and test labelling solutions that will meet these forthcoming compliance requirements. That window makes the availability of market-ready, certified compostable solutions all the more relevant for producers and label converters currently evaluating their options.
Gerard Benthem, sales manager at Futamura, commented on the development: “Compostable fruit and vegetable labels are a great innovation that supports a truly circular economy.”
Marcel de Oude, co-owner of Bio4life, spoke to the collaborative nature of the project: “Our home compostable adhesive technology BioTAK is designed to work hand in hand with renewable home compostable substrates like NatureFlexโข. This partnership showcases how collaboration can accelerate the shift toward packaging that supports a circular economy.”
