Mondi has incorporated I’m green™, a sugarcane based polyethylene from Braskem into its re/cycle StripPouch flexible packaging solution. Presented at Interpack 2026, the collaboration combines renewable feedstock with laser-marking technology to develop an alternative to conventional fossil-based flexible packaging.
The pouch is made with at least 98% I’m green™ bio-based polyethylene, which is derived from renewable sugarcane. The material is intended to expand the use of bio-based plastics in packaging applications for food, home and personal care products.
The design also incorporates laser marking during the converting process, eliminating the need for inks and additional processing steps. This approach allows faster artwork changes and greater personalisation while supporting supply chain efficiency.
“Customers are under growing pressure to meet sustainability targets while managing increasingly complex product portfolios and changing consumer demands. This concept advances circularity with the use of bio-based materials and greater artwork flexibility in a single solution, helping brands respond more quickly to market requirements while progressing towards their circularity goals,” said Jens Kösters, Manager Technical Service, R&D and Innovation, Mondi Consumer Flexibles.
Bio-Based Material and Laser Marking Reduce Packaging Impact
Mondi’s internal Product Impact Assessment indicates significant CO₂ reductions for the bio-based, laser-marked StripPouch compared with a conventional fossil-based, printed and laminated plastic stand-up pouch. The assessment also indicates that the solution maintains the performance expected from flexible packaging.
The environmental performance of I’m green™ bio-based polyethylene is assessed through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The latest study follows ISO 14040, ISO 14044 and ISO 14071 standards and underwent an external critical review by KPMG.
The combination of renewable feedstock and laser marking brings material and converting-process changes into a single packaging concept. The approach is intended to support packaging applications while offering greater flexibility in artwork changes.
“Collaborations like this show how combining renewable feedstock with design innovation can unlock new possibilities for packaging. Together with partners like Mondi, we are advancing solutions that contribute to a lower-carbon future,” said Tim Wagler, Commercial Director EMEA for I’m green™ bio-based.
Mondi and Braskem Advance Flexible Packaging Collaboration
The collaboration brings together Mondi’s flexible packaging expertise and Braskem’s I’m green™ bio-based portfolio. Braskem’s plant-based plastics are produced from responsibly sourced sugarcane and have been commercially available for more than 15 years.
Mondi operates an integrated packaging and paper business, employing 24,000 people across more than 30 countries. In 2025, the company reported revenue of €7.7 billion and underlying EBITDA of €1.0 billion.
The Sugarcane Based Polyethylene used in the StripPouch demonstrates how renewable feedstock can be incorporated into flexible packaging alongside changes to the converting process.
