Pactiv Evergreen has partnered with ExxonMobil, an advanced recycling technology provider, for certified circular foodservice packaging solutions.

Under the partnership, Pactiv Evergreen will provide its customers with certified circular polypropylene (PP) packaging products using ExxonMobil’s Exxtend technology for advanced recycling.

The products, intended for different food brands and foodservice providers, are expected to meet all regulatory requirements and specifications for food contact applications, the packaging firm said.

Pactiv Evergreen foodservice business unit president Tim Levenda said: “Pactiv Evergreen produces more than 14,000 products in 14 different materials that protect, package and display fresh food and beverages.

“Our broad material expertise allows us to support our customers quickly and effectively, and our collaboration with ExxonMobil enables us to offer additional innovative packaging options to our customers with an expanded portfolio of circular packaging.”

ExxonMobil’s Exxtend technology offers performance and quality that are equal to those of virgin polymers while helping to expand the range of plastic materials that can be recycled, the packaging firm said.

The technology breaks the plastic waste into its molecular building blocks to make new goods, including PP, using a mass balance method.

Through the partnership, Pactiv Evergreen will transform PP from ExxonMobil into packaging that is certified circular by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus.

ExxonMobil Polypropylene, Vistamaxx, and Exact global marketing manager Olivier Lorge said: “We are excited to work with Pactiv Evergreen and others in the value chain to help create new opportunities to support the circular economy for plastics.

“In the foodservice industry, we see tremendous opportunity to help address consumer demand for more circular products, without sacrificing performance or safety for PP products in food-contact applications.”

Pactiv Evergreen produces and distributes fresh foodservice and food merchandising goods and fresh beverage cartons in North America.

Its products are designed to protect, package and display food and beverages as per the current industry trends.
