Key takeaways:
- Corplex is positioning closed edge technology as a way to extend AkyPak’s usable life while strengthening hygiene and durability for high-demand sectors.
- The sealed-edge design targets operational efficiency by reducing cleaning complexity and supporting contamination control in regulated environments.
- Enhanced usability and improved visual presentation suggest Corplex is responding to both functional and customer-facing requirements across multiple industries.
Corplex has rolled out a closed edge technology upgrade for its AkyPak reusable plastic packaging line, presenting the feature as a step forward in safety, hygiene and durability for customers operating in demanding industrial settings.
The AkyPak range is manufactured from Correx, a fluted (corrugated) plastic sheet produced in-house, and is used widely in pharmaceuticals, food, automotive and electronics, where contamination control and resistance to wear are critical. By sealing the open corrugated edges of the material, the company says the new design helps limit contamination risks and mitigates tearing or delamination during repeated use. Corplex adds that the reinforced structure is built to cope with intensive handling and heavy-duty operating conditions, supporting longer service life.
A further focus of the update is hygiene management. By closing off the fluting, the design is intended to prevent water ingress and streamline cleaning processes, which is especially relevant for industries governed by strict sanitation standards. Corplex points to pharmaceutical and food applications, including fresh fish handling, as key areas where the sealed edges may offer operational advantages. The company also notes that the material remains compatible with both flexo and digital printing systems.
Corplex CEO Lucas van der Schalk said: “Closed edge technology pushes AkyPak into new territory. It reinforces the primary function of packaging – to protect the product – in a durable, hygienic and sustainable solution. With reusability built in, AkyPak goes a long way to help customers reduce their impact on the environment.”
Alongside performance enhancements, Corplex highlights usability as a design priority, citing snap flaps and tabs intended to simplify assembly and disassembly, particularly in fast-paced sectors such as cosmetics or electronics. The closed edges are also presented as offering a smoother, less abrasive surface for frequent handlers of the packaging.
According to Mr. Van der Schalk, the sealed-edge construction contributes to a more refined visual appearance, which may be advantageous in sectors where packaging is visible at point of sale, including retail, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
