Tetra Pak, in partnership with García Carrión, the Spanish drinks brand, has gone on to unveil the first-ever usage of its paper-based barrier tech when it comes to juice packaging.

The juices are getting rolled out in Tetra Brik Aseptic 200 ml Slim Leaf cartons, which feature a paper-based barrier for juice packs, under the flagship brand of Don Simón.

Made with almost 80% paper, the blend of paper-based barrier with plant-based polymers, which is used in the packaging material coatings, goes on to push the renewable content to more than 90%, as per Tetra Pak, while at the same time, decreasing the carbon footprint by around 43% as compared to an aseptic package that uses an aluminum foil layer as well as fossil-based polymers, which is said to be verified by the Carbon Trust.

The paper-based barrier for juice packs by Tetra Pak goes on to replace the traditional aluminum foil layer with a barrier that’s paper-based.

It said that together with certain other layers in the packaging, the paper-based barrier goes on to safeguard against oxygen, moisture, and light, as well as bacteria.

The new paper-based barrier is most likely to deliver more sets of advantages downstream for recycling the infrastructure efficiency, which includes maximizing the recovery of paper content from carton packages’ recycling process.

The president of García Carrión, Don José García Carrión, remarked that they are indeed very proud to lead the way when it comes to sustainable packaging as far as the juice category is concerned. For over 135 years, García Carrión has been committed to responsible innovation and also, along with it, the respect for the environment.

García Carrión, vice-president, Fala Corujo went on to add that this innovation goes on to support their mission to decrease the environmental impact while at the same time offering high-quality products to their consumers.

Tetra Pak’s Tatiana Liceti, who is the executive vice president with the Packaging Solutions department, said that this launch goes on to represent quite a major step in their journey towards completely renewable as well as recyclable packaging. Through working closely along with their customers, they are indeed proving that sustainable innovation can very much scale throughout the markets as well as categories, while at the same time making sure that packaging does retain its functionality and, of course, quality.
