cthyssenkrupp Uhde subsidiary Uhde Inventa-Fischer has secured a contract with Turkish packaging producer KÖKSAN to develop a new PET production facility in Yumurtalık, Turkey. The agreement marks another step in the companies’ ongoing collaboration, with the upcoming PET plant Turkey project designed to strengthen regional and export-oriented polymer production capacity.

The planned installation will have an annual output capacity of 324,000 tonnes of PET resin, catering to packaging applications and bulk continuous filament (BCF) production. Completion and commissioning are targeted for 2028. Under the scope of the contract, thyssenkrupp Uhde will deliver licensing, along with both basic and detailed engineering, in addition to supplying key plant equipment. The company will also oversee training for Köksan’s operational personnel through its technical and process specialists.

Köksan CEO M Murat Kökoğlu said: “We are very happy to announce this project together with Uhde Inventa-Fischer, as already the first and second production lines in Gaziantep deliver excellent performance and product quality continuously.” The facility will deploy Uhde Inventa-Fischer’s Melt-To-Resin (MTR) process, which is positioned as a more efficient alternative to conventional PET manufacturing routes.

thyssenkrupp Uhde stated that the MTR system eliminates the solid-state post-condensation phase typically required in PET resin production, enabling continuous polycondensation. According to the company, this approach results in lower energy consumption, reduced capital and operational expenditure, and improved raw material efficiency. The technology is also expected to reduce the carbon footprint associated with fuel and electricity use by up to 30%. The system integrates a two-reactor configuration using the patented ESPREE and DISCAGE reactors to achieve high melt viscosities required for production.

The PET resin produced at the site will be supplied to domestic customers, as well as exported to markets across the Middle East, the Americas, Europe and Africa. Commenting on the agreement, thyssenkrupp Uhde CEO Nadja Håkansson said: “We are very proud that Köksan has chosen us to build another state-of-the-art PET plant. Our well-proven MTR process demonstrates that our technologies deliver economic and environmental advantages at the same time, combining reduced energy consumption and higher yield with lower CapEx and OpEx.” The PET plant Turkey development reinforces the role of advanced process technologies in scaling polymer production with improved efficiency metrics.
