Vetain GmbH, a fast-growing start-up specialising in vegan protein powder and nutritional supplements, has transitioned its product packaging to Sonoco’s GreenCan® with a paper-end. Comprising at least 96% paper content, this packaging provides a more recyclable and circular alternative to the rigid paper can with a metal end that the company had previously relied on for its protein products.
Since the initial stages, Vetain, founded in 2021 by athlete-entrepreneurs Philipp Riedl and Luca Gruber with a mission to develop a tasty vegan substitute for traditional protein powder, has positioned the brand around three core values: quality, transparency, and sustainability.
Sustainability has been at the centre of Vetain’s vision since its foundation. The founders recognised that they wanted a packaging ally who could share the similar values of reducing unnecessary waste while taking responsibility for the environment and planet.
Sonoco’s partnered with Vetain in 2023, when Vetain wanted to transition to a complete paper-based package system for the first time. Two years later, they have switched to more sustainable GreenCan with a paper-end.
Sonoco’s GreenCan with a paper-end is entirely recyclable in the paper stream and meets European requirements for recycling. Vetain’s protein powders and other powdered products are available in Germany in this upgraded paper-based format now.
For Sonoco, the partnership highlights its commitment to work with brands committed to highly sustainable and recyclable packaging.
Oliver Kock, Senior Sales Manager for Sonoco Consumer Europe, commented: “Vetain is a great example of young entrepreneurs looking to make a meaningful difference with its brand and packaging.”
Philipp Riedl, co-founder and CEO of Vetain said “Being able to use fully recyclable packaging for our protein powders and other powder-based products supports our brand perception, and many of our customers have praised our new paper-based packaging.”
