Siegwerk Druckfarben AG & Co. KGaA, a global supplier of printing inks and coatings for packaging and labeling, has entered into a strategic collaboration with Ravenwood Packaging, a specialist in linerless labeling technology. The alliance is set up with the intention of promoting more extensive use of sustainable linerless labeling across the packaging industry.

Linerless labeling presents an alternative to conventional labeling. Unlike traditional pressure-sensitive labels, which rely on silicone-coated release liners, linerless technology does not involve the need for such a coating. Through liner material removal, companies benefit from lower production waste and reduced disposal costs. At the same time, the solution increases label yield per roll and reduces storage and transport costs, contributing to sustainability by minimising landfil waste.

Under this collaboration, Siegwerk has formulated and submitted two BPA-free release varnishes that are now certified for use on Ravenwood’s linerless label platforms. These varnishes are fully compliant with the Nestlé Guidance and with the Swiss and German Ink Ordinances and are therefore acceptable for application in Nutrition, Pharma, and Hygiene sectors.

Siegwerk’s varnishes comply with the German Ink Ordinances (GIO), which provide a harmonized set of regulations that guide the safe use of inks on food packaging. Through setting strict migration limits and toxicological standards, the system enables packers to access global markets without compromising consumers’ safety.

“We are excited to collaborate with Ravenwood to bring high-performance, sustainable solutions to the market,” said Guido Lander, Vice President Narrow Web EMEA at Siegwerk. “This partnership reflects our shared commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility.”

In addition to product development, both Siegwerk and Ravenwood are aligning their marketing initiatives and evaluating further opportunities for joint innovation. “We see this as a significant step forward in enabling circular packaging solutions,” said Dan Coe, Director at Ravenwood. “Siegwerk’s expertise in coatings perfectly complements Ravenwood’s linerless technology.”

Siegwerk and Ravenwood plan to showcase their combined solutions at the upcoming LabelExpo where they can demonstrate the benefits of their integrated solution.
