UK-based packaging and paper firm Mondi has commenced production at its โ‚ฌ16m green-field plant in Tangier, Morocco which is capable of producing 100 million paper bags each year.

The paper bag plant will expand Mondiโ€™s production capacity in West Africa to more than 500 million bags per annum. It will help to meet the regionโ€™s rising demand from consumers for paper bags.

The new plant is the packaging firmโ€™s fourth site in West Africa. The company already has two plants in Morocco and one in Ivory Coast.

Mondi West Africa Paper Bags regional manager Hicham Jalal said: โ€œIt is really exciting to see the growth in the West African building industry.

โ€œMondi is uniquely positioned to deliver paper-based packaging materials directly to customers in the region, who benefit from a reliable supply of high-quality paper bags and local services.โ€

According to Mondi, the sack kraft paper used by the locations is produced by the company which will help ensure security for the supply of packaging materials to the regionโ€™s building industry.

Tangier is well situated to supply neighbouring nations as it is situated within a free economic trade zone, said the UK-based firm.

Mondi Paper Bags COO Claudio Fedalto said: โ€œThis investment illustrates our commitment to growing our offering of sustainable packaging through our integrated value chain.

โ€œThanks to the excellent work and spirit of the local team, we secured, progressed and turned this project around incredibly quickly.

โ€œWork on the ground started in January 2022, and we have already started production at our new plant. This excellent achievement was only possible thanks to the highly motivated local team.โ€
