H.B. Fuller Company has announced a strategic investment in advanced oxygen barrier technology through VerdaFresh, a move aimed at strengthening its packaging portfolio and supporting the industry’s transition toward fully recyclable formats. The addition expands the companyโs Barrier Coating Solutions offering with a high-performance technology designed to help packaging manufacturers achieve recyclability goals while maintaining product protection requirements. The development aligns with growing demand for packaging structures that balance sustainability, performance, and regulatory compliance.
The proprietary technology developed by VerdaFresh integrates into H.B. Fullerโs existing barrier coating portfolio and is designed to remove the need for EVOH and other non-recyclable or difficult-to-recycle barrier materials. By enabling mono-material packaging structures, the solution simplifies recycling processes and reduces overall material consumption. The technology is also intended to lower the environmental footprint associated with packaging throughout its lifecycle while preserving the shelf life and protective qualities required for food and consumer goods applications.
โThis is about removing the biggest obstacles to recyclable packaging,โ said Jim East, executive vice president of H.B. Fullerโs Hygiene, Health and Consumable (HHC) business. โThis coating solution expands our already robust portfolio, enabling simpler, more recyclable packaging designs that reduce waste, lower carbon impact, and meet rising regulatory and consumer expectations, without compromise.โ
In addition to its sustainability benefits, the technology offers structural simplification and reduces dependence on complex multi-layer materials that can increase packaging costs. H.B. Fuller said these advantages can help customers pursue environmental objectives while also realizing economic efficiencies. With the integration of VerdaFresh, the company believes it is better positioned to support the packaging industry’s move toward circularity through advanced Barrier Coating Solutions that combine recyclability, performance, and material efficiency.
