SGD Pharma has received ISO 14021 certification for its post-consumer recycled glass packaging – PCR in China, hence becoming the first glass manufacturer in the country to have attained this benchmark.

The certification, which has been issued by Bureau Veritas, goes on to recognize the capabilities of the company when it comes to producing PCR glass packaging and also endorses its stated environmental claims, as per SGD Pharma.

It is well to be noted that ISO 14021 goes on to relate to the self-declared environmental claims, which require that such statements be supported by data that’s verifiable.

Apparently, PCR glass production forms a very central element of the decarbonization pathway of SGD Pharma, which looks for a 42% deduction in the Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions and with it a 25% decrease in the Scope 3 emissions by the end of the decade, making use of 2022 as the reference year. SGD Pharma links the increased usage of recycled glass to such objectives.

Taking into account the data from the European Container Glass Federation – FEVE, SGD Pharma went on to note that a 10% growth in recycled cullet use can very well cut the energy consumption by 3% and also lower the CO₂ emissions by almost 5%.

The newly received certification goes on to confirm a recent production run incorporated between 18% and 35% PCR content, calculated in sync with the methodology of FEVE.

The company remarked that the ISO 14021 audit goes on to verify that its internal tracking systems, as well as its execution of FEVE guidance to measure and validate PCR levels in production, meet the standard’s requirements.

SGD Pharma also underscored that securing sufficient volumes when it comes to compliant post-consumer glass cullet still remains a major challenge for PCR glass manufacture in China.

In response to this, the glass packaging provider also remarked that it has executed a strict, traceable sourcing as well as a testing framework, which is designed to guarantee the consistency as well as full traceability throughout all PCR glass output.

Against a backdrop of strict regulations as well as mounting consumer anticipations surrounding sustainability, the company went on to remark that the beauty brands are increasingly looking forward to packaging options that support circularity and are also backed by verification that’s credible.

It went on to add that certified post-consumer recycled glass packaging provides its customers a very transparent mechanism to lower the environmental effect while at the same time contributing to a business model that’s circular.

Frédéric Barbier, the Asia Pacific general manager for SGD Pharma, said that this certification is more than a landmark; it is a testament to their commitment to lead the sustainable transition within glass packaging for cosmetics.

Through overcoming local supply chain constraints when it comes to securing high-quality PCR cullet in China, they are offering their partners a certified and low-carbon solution that syncs with the global norms.
