PackExpo 2017: Marking and Coding of Primary Packaging at Industrial Speeds with High-Resolution Thermal Inkjet

Ideal for marking and coding variable data in both primary packaging and industrial applications, the VIAjet™ L-Series thermal inkjet printer from Matthews Marking Systems is a clean, fast, and cost-effective alternative to thermal transfer and adhesive labels. A demo model of the VIAjet L-Series, controlled by the MPERIA marking and coding automation platform, can be seen in Booth C-3632 throughout PackExpo Las Vegas at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Nevada, September 25-27, 2017.

The VIAjet L-Series is controlled by MPERIA, allowing it to adapt to virtually any marking and coding environment. MPERIA centralizes control of all primary, secondary and tertiary print operations, and easily integrates with current enterprise systems and existing third-party marking and coding equipment to reduce downtime and cost while increasing productivity. Equipped with a choice of intuitive, touchscreen graphical user interfaces (GUI), MPERIA makes message creation and selection simple by automatically synchronizing graphic and source data inputs from enterprise resource planning (ERP), warehouse management systems (WMS), programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and Big Data systems with minimal information technology (IT) effort.

Leveraging the same cartridge technology found in desktop printers, it provides high native print resolution (600 x 600 dots per inch) at speeds up to 1,200 feet per minute (366 meters per minute)—nearly twice as fast as competitive thermal inkjet systems. Print heads are offered in three sizes. The smallest, the VIAjet L1, prints a 0.5-inch (12.7-millimeter) mark, making it ideal for integration into extremely tight spaces. It can be stitched together with other L1 print heads for extremely high-speed printing, including mailing, promotional coding, lottery coding and serialization. Additionally, L-Series print heads come 1- and 2-inch (25.4- and 50.8-millimeter) print heights.

With a variety of ink types and colors available, the L-Series can imprint onto paper, chipboard, corrugated and plastics. Two new fast dry inks—LS-6023 cartridge-based and LS-7011 methylethylketone (MEK)-based—are ideal for use with the L-Series in marking consumer packaged goods (CPG), as they dry on non-porous substrates in 3-5 seconds and 2 seconds, respectively. Further, for heavy ink volume applications, the L-Series can be equipped with a bulk ink supply system for higher productivity and less downtime.

The VIAjet L-Series and MPERIA platform can be seen in Booth C-3632 throughout PackExpo. For more information, contact Natalie Pizzi at Matthews Marking Systems at 412.477.5019, npizzi@matw.com, or visit matthewsmarking.com
