Henkel has rolled out a new sustainable packaging approach for its adhesive portfolio by shifting to tinplate cans produced using bluemint® steel, a move that delivers a measurable reduction in environmental impact. The initiative, developed in partnership with thyssenkrupp Rasselstein and Pirlo, results in a 62 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional tinplate packaging. This transition marks a significant operational adjustment within Henkel’s packaging systems.

The company is deploying the new packaging format across multiple product categories in Europe, addressing both professional craftsmen and consumer segments. The introduction of this packaging aligns with Henkel’s broader sustainability strategy, which focuses on lowering carbon emissions while preserving the performance standards associated with its adhesive, sealant and coating solutions. The change is being applied without altering product functionality or reliability.

Henkel has long relied on tinplate cans for specialized applications, particularly within professional trades. It is now among the first companies globally to implement bluemint® steel for packaging pipe adhesives, including products under its Tangit brand, known for delivering piping solutions for over six decades. The updated packaging is also being extended to other adhesive formats, including contact adhesives, reflecting a wider material transition across its portfolio.

The sustainability profile of tinplate packaging is further strengthened through the use of bluemint® steel, which reduces emissions during production while maintaining durability and product integrity. This performance has been independently verified and certified by TÜV SÜD. Additionally, tinplate packaging continues to support circular economy objectives, with a recycling rate of 83.7 percent across Europe. The collaboration between Henkel, thyssenkrupp Rasselstein and Pirlo underscores the role of industrial partnerships in advancing lower-emission packaging solutions.
